Direct-Drive Target Designs for the National Ignition Facility

چکیده

LLE Review, Volume 79 121 The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is currently under construction at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). One of the primary missions of the NIF is to achieve fusion ignition by means of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Two main approaches have been considered for achieving thermonuclear yield in ICF. The first approach, known as indirectdrive ICF,1 encloses a DT-fuel target inside a hohlraum. The laser beams are incident on the hohlraum’s wall where the laser light is converted to x rays. These x rays then implode the target, leading to the ion temperature and ρR product necessary to achieve ignition. The second approach, known as directdrive ICF, dispenses with the hohlraum and directly illuminates the laser light onto the target.

The saturn target for polar direct drive on the national ignition facility.

A new target design concept is proposed for direct-drive implosions while the National Ignition Facility is in its initial, indirect-drive configuration. It differs from earlier "polar-direct-drive" designs by adding a low-Z ring around the capsule equator. Refraction in the plasma formed around this ring permits time-dependent tuning of the capsule drive uniformity. An optimized simulation sho...

High-Gain Direct-Drive Target Designs for the National Ignition Facility

LLE Review, Volume 88 183 Introduction Direct drive1 offers the potential of higher target gain for the National Ignition Facility (NIF)2 than indirect drive.3 Directdrive targets have been designed that reach a gain of 45 in onedimensional (1-D) simulations using primarily a pure cryogenic DT shell driven on an isentrope where the pressure is three times the Fermi-degenerate pressure (α = 3). ...

Polar Direct Drive on the National Ignition Facility

212 LLE Review, Volume 96 Introduction Recent advances in direct-drive target design have enhanced target performance beyond that achieved in the original baseline ignition design.1 This substantially increases the probability of achieving moderate to high direct-drive target gain on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The baseline direct-drive design for the NIF is itself very attractive. It...

First Results from Cryogenic Target Implosions on OMEGA

LLE Review, Volume 90 49 Introduction The base-line direct-drive ignition target design for the National Ignition Facility (NIF)1 is a thick cryogenic DT-ice layer enclosed in a thin CH shell.2,3 In direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF)4 a spherical target is illuminated by a large number of laser beams to provide a spherically symmetric implosion. Target implosions with cryogenic DT f...

The Effect of Increased Irradiation Uniformity on Imprinting by 351-nm Laser Light

LLE Review, Volume 71 101 The experimental program1 at LLE supports the national inertial confinement fusion (ICF) effort by performing experiments on OMEGA2 to investigate the requirements for attaining ignition using direct-drive targets on the National Ignition Facility. One of the primary challenges in direct-drive ICF is to minimize perturbations in the target that are created by nonunifor...
